300,000 tonnes of unwanted clothes are being thrown out to landfills each
year. In a bid to reduce waste, we partnered up with Winston Smith (Jakarta based shoe brand) to create a Swap & Shop event at Six Ounces Coffee.
A lot of people have unwanted clothes and shoes in their closet and most of the time they have no idea what to do with it. The Swap & Shop market allowed them to Marie Kondo their closet and support a good cause, and also shop!
During this two-day market, we encouraged customers to give their pre-loved clothes and shoes a second chance to support circular fashion. All the customers who arrived brought in bags of shoes and clothes to donate. All the clothing donations through us have been donated to AOH & Cipete Clothing Drive. All footwear donates through Winston Smith are being repurposed for future shoe samples.
This was a successful event to bring awareness to circular fashion, a sustainable approach to reusing and extending the lifespan of unwanted items. From this event we learnt a lot of things about how consumers shop and the lifespan of each garment.
We learnt was that a lot of the garments that were donated came from fast fashion brands. Extending the lifespan on a fast-fashion garment is extremely important because most of landfills are filled with fast fashion.
This event sparked discussions about why certain clothes were bought and disposed of, and through this opportunity we were able to educate on the importance of shopping responsibly.
